Students join Gulf Harbour School to strengthen their English language proficiency in a supportive and engaging environment. Our specialist ESOL staff design tailored programmes that respond to each student’s individual needs and abilities, supporting the development of reading and listening comprehension alongside spoken and written communication skills. This targeted support is complemented by full immersion in mainstream classrooms, where regular interaction with local students provides rich, authentic opportunities to practise and apply English in everyday contexts.

Our highly skilled staff at Gulf Harbour School are not just teachers they are enablers of thinking, they are builders of character and they are developers of self-esteem and confidence. Our team are passionate about seeing students reach their potential, both academically and wholly in their lives.

By giving students the skills and strategies to think critically, to question and analyse, to be creative, to seek inventive solutions, to collaborate with others to achieve an outcome, and to communicate their ideas and messages, we teach them to be able to apply the knowledge they have learned.

We expose students to a thorough activities programme that includes plenty of opportunity for education outside of the classroom, sports training, cultural and performing arts, and participation in camps and other educational experiences.

Living in Gulf Harbour

Gulf Harbour is a development at the further most tip of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula,
North of Auckland, New Zealand. This area is also known as The Hibiscus Coast.

This picture-perfect slice of land, is ringed by sheltered sandy beaches. Which means plenty of water activities – swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating, stand up paddle boarding; you name it. The name ‘Whangaparāoa’ is Māori for “Bay of Whales”, and pods of orca and dolphin are regularly spotted in the waters off the peninsula.

Explore the walking tracks at beautiful Shakespear Regional Park at the tip of the peninsula for stunning scenery and views over the Hauraki Gulf. Book one of the barbecues and make a day of it with the family.

Alternatively catch the local ferry for a day in Auckland -The City of Sails.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

At Gulf Harbour School we are proud of the cultural diversity of our school community. Families from all over the world join us and we do everything we can to support the children that come to our classrooms with no or little English. Please, note that not only beginners of English join the programme. Some of our ESOL children need help with their reading and writing, although their oral English is quite good and the programme supports them in these weaker areas.

If you are enrolling your child and you know or assume that the student needs language support, please let us know. Dagmar Goodall, the ESOL teacher, will meet your child and decide which ESOL group he or she will go to and if your child is eligible for funding.

The ESOL students are taken once or twice per week out of their class programme to join the English programme for speakers of other languages that we run at our school. They are grouped according to their age and ability of speaking English.

Dagmar, our ESOL teacher, is from Germany and knows that coming to a new country has its ups and downs. We want to make you feel welcome and secure in the knowledge that your children are cared for. Please, come to the parent meetings or ask Dagmar for help when you feel that you need a friendly face: d.goodall@ghs.school.nz

A HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION

Often students find our way of teaching very different to their education at home. While New Zealand holds academic achievement high, and consistently ranks high in education outcomes, we utilise different teaching strategies to engage learners and impart knowledge and learning more effectively.

At GHS we have an exciting and balanced curriculum, with a focus on English and mathematics, and teachers have the flexibility to apply their professional knowledge to personalise learning to the needs of their students. Teachers implement best practice strategies into their daily lessons, curriculum and assessments. This ensures that all learners and learning styles are catered to so that they can absorb, process, comprehend and retain the information more effectively.

DYNAMIC LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

New Zealand has a very hands-on approach to learning, compared to many overseas countries where large class sizes and limited budgets prevent such an intensive way of learning.

At Gulf Harbour School we strive to make learning come alive every day in real life, authentic ways, so that our students gain the most they can from their education. Our teachers are flexible and responsive to students, and create challenging learning activities and look for opportunities to build knowledge. Our lessons involve lots of activities that children actively participate in. This can include getting outside the classroom, and taking a lesson outdoors, going for hikes to observe natural environments, it can be designing and building functioning bridges, or using practical scenarios like pretend restaurants to demonstrate mathematical practices and strategies.

The benefit of this type of engaged learning is that when students enjoy their lessons they pay attention better, they learn more effectively as their brains are more receptive to the information, and they learn more when they can touch and see what they are learning.

SMALL CLASS SIZES

Our class sizes are smaller meaning more individual attention, and that teachers can adjust learning to the student’s current level, as well as work with individuals who need extra support or extension. We support all children to succeed, to take risks and to try. We encourage individuality, and students can pursue the areas they enjoy, and we nurture their own individual talents and abilities. Some children have natural affinity to math, some enjoy environmental studies, and others excel at sport. We challenge all our students to work hard, to strive for goals, to improve, and to achieve across the curriculum

RELAXED AND OPEN

Our approach is relaxed and open, and teachers communicate directly with students involving them in their learning journey. Particularly at the Primary School level our learning environment may be less stressful than the high pressure schooling that many international students are used to.

We believe children need time to absorb and fully understand their learning, and free time to participate in extra-curricular sports, music and other interests as well as time to play and to rest in order to develop the whole child for success physically, academically and emotionally, and many children perform better without the stress of long hours and pressure of testing.

Base Costs

It is understood that all children will participate fully in all aspects of Gulf Harbour School life, and the education programmes offered, including Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC).

Become a Homestay Host Family

A great way to get involved with students from other countries and cultures is to host a visiting student.

We host groups throughout the year, with the peak seasons being the beginning of Term 1, and the beginning of Term 3. Students stay from 2 – 4 weeks, sometimes up to a full term.

By having a student stay as part of your family it is an amazing opportunity for our students and families to showcase our lifestyle here in Gulf Harbour and NZ, and to practice manaakitanga (hospitality) towards visiting students. It is also a great opportunity for our students to experience different cultures and share their learning experiences with others. Hosting can be a very rewarding experience with friendships formed that can last well after the student returns home. Guests are welcomed as part of the family, and included into normal family routines, and we try to match families with guests of similar interests as much as possible.

As a host you are expected to provide clean, comfortable surroundings, including a private bedroom and linen. Hosting includes three meals/day, and morning and afternoon tea, as you provide for your own family. Access to kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities is also required. Older students (age 10 and above) may travel without a parent, the younger students are accompanied, usually by the mother, so accommodation for two guests would be needed. Parents and child, and in some cases students travelling together, may share a room. Homestay families receive a payment to assist with the additional costs associated with hosting these visitors, $300/week for each guest you host. We provide 24 hour support to host families and visiting students.

If you are interested in becoming a Homestay Host Family, or would like more information please email international@ghs.school.nz

If you’re an agent and are interested in representing our school and developing an ongoing agent relationship then please complete the Application Form and return it to the school for consideration.

Please note: Agents must be accredited before submitting student enrolment applications for processing.
